Description

The aim is to build a structure that stays afloat using basic materials.

Rules

  1. Teams of two.
  2. Each team will be given a set of materials which they will have to use to create a stable structure that can stay afloat.
  3. A time limit will be provided within which the teams will have to construct their respective structures.
  4. There are no rounds. Judging criteria include load bearing capacity, aesthetic, economy of materials used.

Mount Mallow

Description

It's a fun challenge to build the most innovative structure out of marshmallow candy and spaghetti sticks.

Rules

  1. Teams of two
  2. The aim is to create a stable structure using the materials provided.
  3. Participants shall be provided with marshmallow candy, spaghetti sticks and other miscellaneous requisites.
  4. Each team will be provided with a time limit reducing after each consecutive round, within which they will have to achieve the objective.
  5. Judging criteria: Each round will have a prescribed height which the participants have to adhere to; economy of materials used

Goldberg Chainz

Description

Presenting the first ever event of Goldberg Machines in SNU. Arrange exciting and challenging Goldberg machines. Run them in possible least time, and compete with other teams to get the fastest chain reaction ever. Remember your Science Classes? It is going to help you this time. Configure, compete and go Chainz!

Rules

  1. The event/tournament will be of two rounds.
  2. Definition of “Sub-Chain” : A preassembled arrangement of objects which will be the part of Goldberg machine. “Sub-Chain” can be placed in any order to make a Goldberg machine

    Round 1 - Complete the Unfinished Goldberg chain:
  1. All the teams will complete 3 pre assembled Goldberg Machines, consisting of some sub-chains. They have to be completed with given material choices in a configuration such that the time taken to finish the chain reaction is the fastest. Every Goldberg Machine will be pre-solved by the organiser, and the official least time of the machines will be given in advance. You will have three chances to configure a machine to achieve the best time possible.
  2. The team attaining the least sum of all the best times of three machines will be ranked higher. In case of tie, a tie breaker will be conducted. The top 3 teams go for Round 2
    Round 2 - Make the complicated, yet a faster Goldberg Machine:
  1. A common start and end situation of the chain will be given to the teams. With the maximum of 12 stages and at least 3 self-build stages, a Goldberg chain has to be made. Everything will be available from which the teams need to access and make from. All chains will be given one test chance to check whether it works. After that, the three teams will run the machine at the exact same time. Incomplete machines will be disqualified. If all the machines fail to complete, then an addition of 30 minutes will be given to fix. Incomplete chains after the given time will be disqualified.
  2. The Score will be calculated as-
    Score = ((1 sec) * (Number of stages used + Number of pre-built stages) / (Time taken in sec)) + Bonus points
  3. The team with the highest score will be the winner. For ties, tie breaker will be organised.

Scrap to Finish

Description

Care to put some raw engineering skills to test? Challenge yourself and create a mechanism/device using scrap material that you will be provided with, in order to achieve a pre-defined objective. At the end of a successful task, you’ll have hit the bull’s eye.

Rules

    Stages of the event
  1. Ideate : Teams are provided with the list of available scrap material & their objective. Then they have 30 mins to come up with a mechanism and list out their material requirements.
  2. Procurment : Team are given 2-5 mins to procure their items.
  3. Build it : Team will be given 40-45 mins to realise their idea/concept.

  1. Each item has a cost associated with it.
  2. Any repurchase of items will incur double the original cost.
  3. Teams with be judged on 3 categories i.e.
      Minimum cost of making.
      Ability of the design to acheive the objective.
      Accuracy of the device.
      Each of the 3 judging categories will carry different weightage.

The Blueprint

Description

A 2-D and 3-D design competition aimed at giving a platform to the students of SNU their crazy design and software skills on AutoCAD, Fusion-360, Solidworks and Catia.

Rules

    This competition will gauge a participant's grasp on cad modelling software.
    The event will be divided into two stages:

    Stage 1
  1. The participants will be given a 2D drawing that they will have to make on one of the following cad softwares based on their preference. The softwares are AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA and Fusion 360.
  2. It will be a timed stage and the first few participants (depending upon the moderators decision) will qualify for the next round.

  3. Stage 2
  4. The selected participants will be given drawing views of a few parts that they will have to 3D model on a software of their choice (from the softwares mentioned above), and then assemble the parts to make a final working piece.
  5. The fastest participant to finish this stage correctly will win the competition.
